This morning’s run was another full 4-miler. It’s funny, I have no idea what to expect when I start running, if I can go the whole time running. I just start going from electric post to the next one and just keep my goals short. Heart rate stayed between 147 and 155 which was pretty good. At the 1.5 mile mark I set out to see how long it would take me to run a mile and that was 10.5 minutes. The last 1/4 mile I decided to ramp it up to see what would happen. Found another comfortable pace and got the heart rate up to 162 on average so I might try to find that pace more during the 4-miler the next time.
Looking forward to a night off. Pretty tired after last night’s workout and this morning’s run. Plan on relaxing with the family and maybe do some cleaning before going to bed early. My thoughts are all over the place and I feel my drive isn’t as strong as it has been. Hopefully sleep will cure what’s been going on the last couple of days.
Here is a picture of my cousin Danita and I from the family reunion. Danita and I were close friends growing up and it’s always a blast to connect with her again. I hope to get more pictures like this of myself up here as I dislike the static pictures of me standing in front of a wall.
Danita and me
This heading is a new category I’m going to set up to mark weight milestones or fitness milestones. Today I had a fitness milestone. I’ve been doing 4 milers for a while now – walking some of the time, running most of the time. Today I ran for all of the time. I had an idea that this is what I wanted to do today and it felt good all the way around. I set a slower pace and just kept focused on mini goals. The next post, the next road sign, to the end of the woods. At one point a skunk crossed the road 200 feet in front of me. OF ALL DAYS FOR A SKUNK TO DO THAT!! I kept on going. I knew I had pushed myself pretty good by the time it was for me to slow and cool down. It was probably my best sweat for being outside and I could feel it in my legs. I ran 4 miles today. I still can’t believe it. I still hate running but I might be addicted to it. Not my last milestone but a big one for my mind.
Tonight was another night for a walk with the dog but this time the whole family came with. My wife took some pictures of me to show how my progress has been. I don’t like the progress pics of me standing in front of a wall. I like action shots which also gives everyone a taste of what the country life up here looks like and also how flat it is. Flat as a pancake which makes for beautiful sunsets. Another thing about the pics. I hate them. I know I look better, much healthier and slimmer but it still doesn’t match the mental picture I have of myself. I’ve made a lot of progress but I’m not done yet.

Me and the puppy. Can you see what I'm dealing with?

Had a great night’s sleep and felt ready to exercise this morning. As I promised myself, I kept to the exercise bike to ease up on the back. That doesn’t mean I didn’t work my butt off. 735 calories burned in 43 minutes. I just love that totally drenched feeling that tells me I put a great effort into the workout. Maybe it’s not the most efficient workout but there is something energizing about working that hard. Another great thing is that my chest strap works with the heart rate monitor built into the exercise bike. I wore my watch at first but after seeing that they were both the same rate and it was easier to follow the display on the bike, I took the watch off.
Eating was good. We had Subway brought in for a work lunch with a vendor and then a great salad tonight. We had grilled a lot of chicken on Sunday and my wife has been great at saving that for me during the week. I did have a yogurt tonight after a mile walk with my boys. I think that walk did me some good as I took in the gorgeous evening and thought about the things I take for granted. I’ve got a great family (pictured below), live a lifestyle that I never thought possible, have an amazing view of nature from the back of our home, I have a great job and hobby that I love to do, and have been given a healthy body that I’m finally figuring out how to take care of. Life is full of blessings, sometimes you just have to take a breath, think about them, and cherish them before they slip out of your hands.
One more kid (up to 3), a brand new house (still waiting to close), and the blessing of a good job during this trying time. I got sidetracked with my weight loss last time due to an injury. I gained back some of the weight, not all of it or more which I feel good about. It was hard to get back into exercise after the injury and then the building of the house consumed all of my time. Now we have time, SPACE, and I’m motivated. I work with guys who think healthy, eat healthy and struggle with staying in shape. It’s great to talk to them about new recipes that taste good and that are good for me. My wife is on board to with what we eat as a family. She’s already in great shape but it was bugging me how we were eating processed food like the Mac and Cheese all the time.
So it’s been 2 weeks since I started up again. I initially weighed 278 and I am now at 269, 7lbs the first week and 2lbs this last week. It may have been too much broccoli or other thing but at least the other things were healthy and I still lost 2 lbs. My exercise is focusing on the treadmill with a push to run more than I did last time. I’m also getting more into weights, pull-ups (50 reps before every other time on the treadmill) and built a step just to work/build other muscles. When my hands start getting bored on the treadmill, I pull out 2 5lb weights for resistance. Time on the treadmill varies a lot. The shortest was 30 minutes. The longest was today for 1 hour 40 minutes because I wanted to see what happened after 99:59. It stopped. The treadmill said I burned 1150 calories but it’s hard to trust. I don’t think I’ll be doing much of that. I’m going to keep it around 30 to 40, varying speed and incline and really work at keeping my heart rate up and my breathing hard.
So that’s it for this post. I’ll try to be more consistent and posts closer to a daily schedule. It may be boring but I’m just doing this for me. Maybe it will help somebody someday.
