Pushing myself

It’s funny and I know I’ve said this before.  When I’m about to try something new, I rarely wake up knowing that this is going to be the day.  I had my breakfast this morning, set up my Google Reader (will talk about this in a little bit), but on my shoes and then thought today I’m going to really push it with my sprints.  So I did my warm up half mile and got ready mentally for it.  What I’ve been doing with my sprints is go from one telephone pole to the next, rest to the next telephone pole, and then repeat.  I’ve been able to repeat that ten times in one set.  Today I sprinted the distance of 2 sets of telephone poles and then rested the distance of 1 set of telephone poles.  I did this 6 times and it wiped me out.  I tried jogging back and while I was able to do most of it, I had to take some breaks.  My calves were on fire.  So glad I took an extra cool down time just to make sure everything was stretched out.  During the day they were not too bad so that’s a great sign but I’d be lying if I was looking forward to doing it again on Friday.  Am I going to do it again on Friday, you betcha!

Ze Google Reader!  Love it!  I have a few favorite blogs I like to track but get tired of going to each link and going through my bookmarks to get to the link.  I’ve known about the reader for a while but couldn’t make it work the way I wanted it to.  Guess I just needed a purpose that it was best for.  So I put the RSS feeds in the Reader so that whenever one of the blogs has a new post, it shows up like a new, unread, email.  I love it.  It simplifies everything and I don’t spend so much time visiting sites where there is no new post.

Today we had a vender join our company and provided a lunch for everyone.  It was ok.  Pulled pork or tender loin pork sandwiches with potato salad, fruits and veggies, and dessert that looks like it went through preservative valley.  I skipped the dessert, had one sandwich and one scoop of potato salad, lots of fruits and veggies, and a half can of Sprite.  That was really sweet.  So now coupled with the 2 slices of pizza I had tonight, I have to get going on my workout yoga.  It will also feel good to stretch the legs a bit.

I’m going to sleep good again.

Strong

I feel strong today.  Not the muscles in my arms but my body and will power.  Had a great exercise time this morning and tonight.  This morning I got some weight training in before getting the HIIT in.  I didn’t feel particularly strong during them but I made it through 8 reps.  Tonight I went roller-blading for 8 miles.  It was a little difficult going the one direction as I had a pretty good wind to go against.  I was hoping to go for 10 but my body was telling me it had had enough and I knew I should be getting home.  One interesting thing is that I happened to look down at my gut and it hit me how much it has shrunk.  I still have it but it’s getting smaller.  That thought makes me smile.

Today was an interesting day at work.  Training all morning with 8 venders and then there was pizza offered for lunch.  Pizza Hut pizza.  I walked away.  I had prepared a lunch for the day without knowing this was going to be offered and I just didn’t need the pizza anymore.  I’ve always loved Pizza Hut pizza but I know more now about the calories and fat that is in that stuff and I won’t do it.  Temptation came back again during the afternoon breaks as they were trying to get rid of the rest of the pizza.  I didn’t budge.  I like where I’m going and there is no looking back, not even at the fat I’m leaving behind.

A Different Kind of Exercise

Monday night is supposed to be the night when I start my circuit training for the week but plans, ah plans, they do tend to get de-railed….  We’ve finally have had about 3-4 dry days and with rain coming tonight it was time to burn the insulating hay over the drain field for the house.  I had to do this carefully because my smaller burn pile is closer to the woods with dead grass leading to a fiery doom.   I had to plan careful.  I started a fire at one end of the burn pile and while it made it’s way over to the side closest to the wood, I started little fires in the grass around the pile to create a burning barrier.  Worked out pretty good.  Once that was done, came in for a salad, carrots, and a tiny bit of ice cream and then got to work.  Total, I spent2.5 hours out there working my tail off.  I was surprised by the amount of sweat it produced.  Partly from walking in the mud.  Other partly from the weight of the wet hay from underneath.  I probably didn’t burn as many calories as I would have if I did a circuit training but it was a different workout for my body and I got something accomplished before the rains came.  And that feels pretty good.

Weigh Day

I lost 5lbs this last week for a total of 23lbs.  Just when I’m second-guessing my calorie intake I have a week like this.  It feels so good to have an above normal week and I am going to take pride in this one.  I was looking at my spreadsheet for weight loss tracking.  It breaks down to a schedule that is for losing on average 1.5lbs, then 2lbs, then 2.5 lbs.  Right now I am 8lbs ahead of the 2.5lbs schedule so I’m enjoying that buffer.  I know that for the most part the weight loss will be around 2lbs per week with a few weeks where there might be no weight loss.  But it’s great to see progress.  Another milestone is that 255 marks a 40lb weight loss of when I was at my heaviest, 295lbs.  The only time I want to see these numbers is in my memories.

I forgot to mention.  Yesterday I was able to fit into a pair of jeans that I bought almost 2 years ago.  At that time I had lost some weight and this pair was supposed to be my next pair to fit into.  I never got to it because I got sideline by an injury and then by the busyness of building our house.  What is really significant about these pants is that they are size 38.  I am out of the 40’s!  Still a long ways to go but yay!

Today’s workout was a lot of work.  I kinda push it on Saturday’s and I think I’ll be feeling it tomorrow.  This morning I continued the alternating speeds but this time pushed the fast part to 5mph and added one set so I went to 45 minutes.  Treadmill said I burned 660 calories.  There was a lot of sweat with that one.  This late afternoon I did try another circuit training that had to do with my core.  It says to do 3 circuits but I could only handle 2.

10 minutes of warm-up on the treadmill.

40 steps

Romanian Dead Lift 10lb weight 15 per side.  Holding a 10lb weight and bending my back over til the weight is below/at the knee.  One leg is straight while the other is raised backwards.  Great for balance and it really pulled at my hamstrings.

40 steps

Wood chop 15 per side.  Making a woodchopping movement.  Simple

40 steps

Alternate lunge with rotation and 5lb weight 10 per side.   This one hurts.  Take the weight and extend it straight in front.  Step forward with right leg, bend down, and then extend to the right.  Bring weight back to center and then pull back to stand straight.  Ouch.

40 steps

Plank press, hold for 30 seconds

40 steps

20 Pushup

40 steps

Twist crunch on ball, 15 per side.

Maybe in 2/3 weeks I’ll be ready to add a 3rd repetition.

Breakfast

2 eggs and 2 toast 2 celery

Early lunch

yogurt with granola, 1 reese cup egg thingy, soy nuts and almonds, carrots

Late lunch

Tuna salad with cucumber ranch dressing, 1 fudge covered graham cracker, almonds, 1 reese’s cup egg thingy

Dinner

2 slices of pizza

I still want to eat

I was in the mood to eat today and I can’t figure out why.  Once again I know I’m losing, the pants I wore today is proof of that in that it’s hard to keep them up when the belt is loose.  I tucked in my shirt today and that felt great.  Clothes fit.  But I still feel fat.  My stomach feels huge.  It set my mood today.  Kinda down.  I felt like eating and I did.  It was low calorie stuff and I didn’t get out of control but it was more than I wanted to.  Maybe it was from having a great workout this morning on the treadmill.  I ran for 18 minutes, then sharp incline at a slower pace, finishing it off with another 6 minutes of running before cooling off.  It felt good to be that strong.  Maybe my body needed more calories.  We’ll see what the scale says at the end of the week.

Tonight another good session of circuit trainging.  Had to do it while the wife was grocery shopping but it wasn’t too hard to keep the kids busy.  But she wasn’t too happy that I was working out then.  I just don’t want to wait too long in the night.  I’d like to take a long bath while watching Heroes and then go to bed early to get up early.  Better go help get the kids to bed

The horse took off but I’m still riding.

Today was a bit of a surprise.  I thought I would test the foot out some more so I tried to run a little bit.  4.5mph and try to go 6 minutes.  That felt good so then I went 10, then 16…. At minute 19 I was really conscience of how my foot was feeling and the only thing that was under any duress was my breathing.  So I went two more minutes at 5mph.  No problems.  The only thing was slowing down and then going to a steep incline.  That wiped me out!  Maybe that is a better workout for me since it is more strenous but easier on the joints.

Pretty active today.  The driveway is dry enough to use the garage again with the cars.  I cleaned out the garage from all the gravel that’s been dragged in by ties.  Also did some irrigation to help dry out the yard a big faster and burned some boxes on the brush pile.  Afternoon was pretty relaxing but tonight I did another 2 rounds of circuit training.   Starting to feel it already so I’m going to soak in the tub tonight to treat the muscles.

Oh, I almost forgot!  I lost 2lbs for the week!  Not much but with not exercising that much or as hard, it’s good to see that come off a little more.  I was ready to accept and actually hoping for a week that I just maintained but I’m still making progress.  Very cool.  2 more pounds and I can order a new mp3 player.

2 eggs with toast, grape juice, apple

Lunch

2 slices of homemade pizza, 1 reese’s chocolate/peanut butter egg and a hard cover version, almonds

Dinner

tuna salad with cucumber ranch dressing, almonds, 1 reese’s chocolate/peanut butter egg and a hard cover version

Weigh Day.

Lost 4lbs this week.  I was hoping for that exact number to see some better results than last week.  I doubt that it ever be more than that in one week.  Still noticing how things feel different.  Clothes are looser, even able to wear clothes that I haven’t worn in a while.  My face is changing too.  Things are becoming more defined.  I have a long way to go but love that things are happening.  From now on I’m going to be happy with 2lbs/week.  That will get me to my 1st major goal in September/October, actually sooner than I would like because I would need another 4 months of savings to get to the financial goal where I need to be for  the laptop I want.  My feelings were further encouraged after reading this article.  http://www.burnthefatblog.com/archives/2009/02/the_2_pounds_per_week_rule_and.php

Today’s plan was to hit the treadmill this morning which I did and then do my circuit training but plans changed as they tend to do.  My wife wasn’t able to go to Grand Forks today because of bridges that are closed.  That freed me up to clean the bathrooms and then something I had put off for a couple of days.  I did 2 hours of snow shoveling and getting my car unstuck in the driveway.  My heart rate kept up at a pretty high rate so I feel I got the work out I needed.  After I was done I went to our old house to pick up more items to move over.  With everything put away it was time to call it a day.  The shower felt so good and now I’m relaxing for the evening.  I have a radio to tear apart and try to fix and then it’s game time with the kids.

It’s been a good Saturday.
